SARIKEI: The Sarikei branch of United People’s Party (UPP) is set to make its presence felt following the installation of its pioneer committee and opening of its office.

Branch chairman Chan Phan Chan said his committee will map out a comprehensive plan of action to ensure the people are properly and satisfactorily served.

Citing an example, Chan said they planned to set up a Community Leaders Service Centre at the branch office situated at No. 11 Jalan Bersatu here, where community leaders from UPP and other Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties are also welcome to use the facility to serve the people.

As for now, he said the service centre would be placed under the charge of Pemanca Frederick Wong Kung Kuong.

He was glad to announce that Penghulu Kasa Tuba of UPP and Pemanca Edward Laden from Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras) had agreed to extend their services through the centre.

Like any political party, UPP Sarikei branch will embark on an aggressive membership drive to make it a force for championing the cause of the people, he elaborated.

“To date, UPP Sarikei branch has a total of 1,537 members, which is considered a good beginning for a new party,” Chan added.

“Young people who have not joined any political party and anyone supportive of the BN’s style of politics and philosophy are most welcome to join UPP,” he said further, while emphasising that UPP is now a component of BN Plus.

In that respect, he said UPP fully subscribed to the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

UPP pioneer committee chairman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh who was invited to officially install the first UPP Sarikei branch committee called on the grassroots leaders to make it a point to mingle freely with the people on the ground to understand their problems and needs.

In order to emerge as a strong party, they had no other choice other than getting the people’s support, he stressed.

He advised those who had registered as members to set a good example, work as a team and put the party’s interest before self in order to make UPP a preferred political vehicle.

Among those present were UPP Pelawan branch chairperson Datuk Janet Lau, Bukit Assek branch chairman Siak King Kong, Kanowit branch chairman Cr Yii Sing Ton and Meradong branch chairman Pemanca Dr Thomas Hii.
