KUCHING: United People’s Party (UPP) has submitted its candidate list to state Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

The party has also decided that it will lend support to all BN component parties including Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) to ensure victory for the coalition in the upcoming state election.

“We have identified candidates for areas which we believe will be allocated to us. However, we will leave the final decision to the chief minister.

“As a sign of total solidarity and commitment, all branches are actively gearing up to give full support to all UPP candidates when and where needed, regardless of branches and regions.

“For areas where we are not fielding our candidates, we have decided to lend a helping hand to all component parties including SUPP if there is any request from any of these parties to ensure that state BN has the greatest victory possible,” said UPP publicity chief Liu Thian Leong in a statement after chairing a meeting here yesterday.

He said UPP was looking at the big picture and thus was willing to overlook any difference it has with other component parties at this crucial time and was prepared to work together with them for the good of state BN as a whole.

Yesterday UPP called for a meeting at its headquarters during which all its branches in Kuching were instructed to set up a branch election committee before Jan 12 as preparation for the upcoming state election.

“In the meeting, we also decided that in areas where we are instructed to field our candidates, we will make sure that we either wrest the lost seats or defend the seats,” he said.

In view of the coming Lunar New Year, UPP president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh when contacted took the opportunity to appeal to all members of UPP and the Chinese community to make ‘supporting Adenan’ their New Year resolution.

Reminding that Adenan had brought reforms like annual allocation for Chinese independent private schools, making it easier for Chinese to join the civil service and recognising Unified Examinations Certificate (UEC) which were in the wish list of the Chinese community, Wong called on the community to reciprocate by giving Adenan the support he deserved.

“The Chinese community must make sure that they give their support to Adenan. With the support of the Chinese, Adenan would be able to fight for more rights for them.”

On a related issue, Wong revealed that UPP leaders had a half-hour meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the airport before seeing the latter off.

“We had a very jovial but fruitful meeting with the deputy prime minister. Whatever transpired from the meeting is positive,” said Wong, who refused to reveal more.
